Match report – Oisín v Sarsfield 6th May 2012
Half time score: Oisín 2-05 v Sarsfields 0-06
Full time score: Oisín 2-11 v Sarsfields 1-10
Glenariffe Oisín’s welcomed Belfast side Sarsfields knowing a win would put them top of the league.
The playing conditions were ideal with no real wind and only the odd shower of rain under the shadow of the rolling glens. It was the hosts Oisíns who started out brighter with a point from Kevin McDonnell in the opening minute from the 20m. 2 minutes later, a point from Dan McKillop followed by a 65m free in off the post for Micky Gettens to assert the lead for Glenariffe. On the 6 th minute, a great solo run from Dan McKillop resulted in a goal and this was quickly followed by a superb long range point for Niall Murray. After 12 minutes of play, Sarsfield’s got their first point on the board when Daniel McKernan carried the ball 20m before flicking it over the bar. A minute after McKearnan was involved
again as he was denied by a brilliant save from Seánán McToal. Sarsfield got another point on the 19th minute from a 65m free by Sean Og McGuinness. Two scores for Oisíns followed before the 20 minute mark as Gettens got a point from a 65 and Randal McDonnell scored a goal through the keepers legs from the 13m line. In the 10 minutes leading up to the first half, Sarsfields hit a flurry of unanswered points to narrow the gap at half time to 2-05 to 0-06.
Sean Og McGuinness was first to add to the score board in the 7th minute of the second half, Oisíns soon followed with 3 points in 5 minutes from Gettens, Murray and Seamus Doc McDonnell. Sean
Og McGuinness recorded the last of his 4 points from a 30m free with 15 minutes left on the clock. Soon after, Peter Corr of Sarsfield was given his second yellow card leaving Sarsfield to 14 men. Kevin McDonnell recorded another point for the Oisíns with a 45m free before Sarsfields hit back with a goal.
A possible turning point came when with 5 minutes left; Sean Og McGuinness put wide a 21m free which would have closed the gap to 3 points. Oisín’s subs McDonnell and Kearns added to the score board with a point each before Gary Lennon scored the last point of the game. The result now leaves the Oisins top of the league and one more step closer to moving back up to Division 1. Well Done lads.
